A section of teaching staff from the College of Health Sciences successfully finished a pedagogy, andragogy and mentorship training held from 27th to 29th May, 2019.
The 3-day workshop was conducted by the Centre for Pedagogy and Andragogy (CEPA) based at the College Of Education and External Studies in Kikuyu Campus.
The workshop covered major topics such as engaging and activating learners during teaching, application of problem-based learning, curriculum alignment, lecturer-student mentorship to enhance teaching in the university, communication skills and experiential learning and integration of ICT.
The training was conducted in order to build the general pedagogical foundation of all lecturers by equipping them with the necessary skills in didactics, experiential learning and problem solving based learning with an aim to enhance the quality of graduates. Speaking when he officially opened the workshop, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs Prof Julius Ogeng’o said the training was part of sustainability of the University of Nairobi Vision of a World Class University committed to scholarly excellence.
He highlighted some of the major steps the university had taken to ensure all lecturers undergo pedagogy skills training to improve their teaching and delivery of lectures.
“Every year, thousands of students from the University join the job market, lecturers must prepare the students to be the best in the very competitive job market,” Prof. Ogeng’o said.
Also present during the opening ceremony were Dr. Regina Mutave, Dean School of Dental Sciences, Chairmen of Departments and Academic staff of the School.
The participants were awarded with certificates after the completion of the training in an event that was officiated by Prof. Machoki who promised to hold such trainings regularly to ensure that all teaching staff are trained.
“This is a journey we have begun and we will do greater things in future. We carefully selected participants by ensuring the young upcoming lecturers and experienced professors were selected to attend the workshop.
“We are trying to refocus at all levels, as we move forward we must appreciate we have support from all levels. By the end of the year we plan to ensure all lecturers, research assistants, and tutorial fellows are trained,” Prof. Machoki said.
Similar workshops have been also been conducted for lecturers from the other colleges at the University of Nairobi.
